BPA

What is Bisphenol A (BPA)?

a chemical used to harden certain plastics, like polycarbonate (PC #7) and epoxy resin.

Where is it found?

BPA is used in water bottles, food packaging, like in the linings of metal cans and microwaveable food containers, dental sealants, and some plastics used in children’s toys.

Why is it harmful?

It is a synthetic estrogen and is classified as an endocrine disruptor. It is associated with endocrine disruption, recurrent miscarriage,  increased cancer risk and many other chronic health problems, often from low-level exposure. Several studies show that up to 95% of Americans likely carry bisphenol-A in their bodies.

How can we avoid it?

Completely eliminating BPA may not be possible until significant legislation is passed, but there are some steps you can take to reduce your exposure.

To Reduce Bisphenol-A Exposure
Lose Choose
Polycarbonate bottles and packaging with no label or PC or #7 label (unless designated as bioplastic).

NOTE: Heating foods in polycarbonate containers causes bisphenol-A to leach more rapidly.

Glass, ceramic or stainless steel instead
All canned foods that contain bisphenol-A in the interior coating of the container.

Canned tomato products or products with high fat or acidic content, since they will leach BPA more rapidly.

Local, certified-organic, whole foods, like produce, bulk dry goods and meats from your local CSA (community supported agriculture program), food cooperative, or farmers market.

Eden Foods sells most of its canned food, except the highly acidic tomato products, in BPA-free cans.

Dental sealants- some formulations may leach bisphenol-A. To check with your dentist about the ingredients in the products they use.
